Sydney Jewish Museum

The Sydney Jewish Museum provides insights into three particular subjects:

1.
Visitors will be provided with experiences and understanding of the events of the Holocaust by allowing them to meet, in a dignified and moving environment, people who were involved. The Museum combines the voices of those who have lived through the Shoah with concise text, audiovisual displays, primary source materials, and authentic images, offering a unique educational excursion.

2.
Our ground floor exhibition traces the significant events which have determined Jewish experience and offers insight into Judaism’s central beliefs, its sacred texts and way of life. The central feature of the exhibition is a ‘walk through’ timeline of Jewish history. The timeline is surrounded by thematic displays that allow the visitor to discover the intricacies of Jewish belief, texts and traditions and places Jewish events in the context of worldhistory.

3.
An exploration of Jewish life in Australia, from the arrival of about sixteen Jewish convicts aboard the First Fleet, through the various waves of  migration to the present. Interactive displays provide further insight into  Judaism as a living tradition, and the memorable characters that  brought these traditions to Australian shores. A state-of-the art highlight  is portrayed within the George Street diorama, where the “pepper’s  ghost” one of Australia’s first Jewish convicts who takes visitors on a  virtual journey of Jewish life in Australia in the 1840s!
