“A warm, enjoyable search for roots, a search everyone in this society can identify with.” Chicago Sun-Times

Shalom and Moira Blumenthal present the Australian Premiere of THE GOD OF ISAAC, described as “a serious comedy” and a multi-dimensional love story written by celebrated American playwright James Sherman. To be directed by Moira Blumenthal THE GOD OF ISAAC plays at the Eternity Playhouse, Darlinghurst from 5 to 22 September.

It’s 1977 in Skokie, Illinois. When Isaac Adams, a second-generation American Jewish journalist, learns of a plan for a group of neo-Nazis to stage a demonstration in Skokie, Illinois, he wonders what, if anything, his involvement should be. Because Isaac was raised in a non-observant home, his Jewishness had been of no relevance to him, “being Jewish meant no more than being right-handed”.

Determined to find the truth, Isaac goes on a quest to find answers about his heritage, his mother, and himself. Consequently, it impacts his life in unexpected ways including the toll it takes on his relationship with his mother and the non-Jewish wife whom he loves.

JAMES SHERMAN
Sherman has written more than a dozen plays that have been performed worldwide including Beau Jest, Magic Time, Mr 80%, Jest a Second!, Romance in D, From Door to Door, Affluenza!, Half and Half and Jacob and Jack.

The Art Of Banksy

Event Date: 14/09/2019, 11:00 am

THE ART OF BANKSY, the world’s largest touring collection of Banksy’s works
Note: The winning tickets will be sent in the mail to the winners. The tickets will be valid for any date that the exhibition is on.
THE ART OF BANKSY, the world’s largest touring collection of Banksy’s works, will open at the Entertainment Quarter in Sydney from Friday 13th September. THE ART OF BANKSY has already generated international excitement when it visited Melbourne, Tel Aviv, Auckland, Toronto and Miami, and now this unique exhibition comes to Australia for a limited season.
THE ART OF BANKSY showcases 80 original works associated with, arguably, the most intriguing and talked-about artist in modern history. These privately-owned pieces of Banksy’s works, include canvasses, screenprints and sculptures. Whilst the touring exhibition is not authorised by Banksy, the show is curated by Steve Lazarides, the artist’s former manager and photographer.

Banksy, whose identity is the art world’s biggest secret, is an enigmatic artist and world- recognised political activist. His graffiti-influenced stencil technique, often combined with anti-establishment slogans, is immediately identifiable and never fails to generate attention and controversy. Over the years, Banksy has carried out a considerable number of "pranks" including secretly hanging his works inside various museums around the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Britain museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History. One of the biggest stories in the art world last year was Banksy having his “Girl with Balloon” painting go through the shredder just moments after the work was sold for nearly $1.4 million at auction.

Event Date: 04/09/2019, 08:30 pm

Young comic actress teams with award-winning playwright for tour-de-force debut
A brand-new work from the pen of award-winning writer-director JOANNA WEINBERG is set to premiere at Sydney Fringe this September… and it marks the stunning solo debut of comedian and actor JODINE HOLLI WOLMAN.

Minky Opens a Gallery is a hilarious multi-character tour-de-force that propels its audiences into the alternately glitzy and sordid world of the art establishment. Following Minky you’ll learn the dos and don’ts of how to turn the art world upside-down to win your art gallery infamy within six short weeks.
Minky Westin is a sharp-talking, substance-abusing, poor little rich girl, whose every move is snapped by the paparazzi.
Her Rich List father has given her six weeks to make something of herself or be disinherited. Desperate to impress him, Minky tries to open an art gallery... with no prior knowledge of art. Smarter than she looks, she quickly gets to grips with an industry whose rules are more business than art. Will her daring final move put her on the map forever or leave the paparazzi baying for her blood?

French Without Tears

Event Date: 01/09/2019, 02:00 pm

A historic recreation for the Independent Theatre’s 80th Anniversary
Celebrate the Independent Theatre’s 80th birthday with afternoon tea followed by a moved reading of the comedy 'French Without Tears' by Terence Rattigan, directed by Sydney theatre legend Aarne Neeme – and starring stage legends Terrence Clarke and Glenn Hazeldine.

On 2 September 1939 the legendary Dame Doris Fitton renamed and reopened The Independent Theatre with a production of the popular comedy French without Tears by Terence Rattigan. Even more dramatic, the declaration of WWII was made after opening night!

80 years later, the New Independent Players (a specially assembled company of theatre veterans and emerging talent) bring a special moved reading of French Without Tears back to the Independent Theatre stage, under the direction of Aarne Neeme – who knew Doris Fitton.
Proudly presented by the Seaborn, Broughton & Walford Foundation (SBW) – the force behind the rebuilding, renovation, rebirth and renaissance of the elegant Independent Theatre.
French Without Tears is a classic comedy of manners. A group of young (and one not so young!) men are studying French - the diplomatic language of the time.
But secretly, they are learning about the diplomacy of Love and Sex - with its own tendency for tears as well as laughter.
The play was a huge international hit in its day and it is fascinating to see how much has changed in the attitude towards women.
This special event is a celebration of the theatre, its rich history (and countless famous alumni!)
and especially a tribute to the remarkable Doris Fitton and her contribution to Sydney theatre.

FIRE ON - A Prelude In Tea Event

Event Date: 25/08/2019, 02:30 pm

“FIRE’S ON” a passionate program
The Streeton Trio – Emma Jardine, Benjamin Kopp and guest cellist Chris Pidcock - return to the Independent Theatre in North Sydney this August
with “FIRE’S ON” a passionate program consisting of three of the most lyrical and expressive pieces ever written for piano trio.
It’s the latest of the Prelude in Tea series which – as always - includes a mouth-watering afternoon tea!

Arthur Streeton’s ‘Fire’s On’, painted in 1891, depicts a man being stretchered out of the Lapstone tunnel after a botched explosion.
The drama of the scene, almost overshadowed by the heroic landscape, sets the backdrop for this passionate program, featuring music of Aresnky, Babadjanian and Shostakovich.
Arensky’s scintillating and beautiful piece continues the Russian tradition of elegiac piano trios
with his four movement romantic masterpiece, inspired by the death of his friend.
Babadjanian is an Armenian composer known for making use of folk music elements in his work.
His relatively small output contains some masterpieces, including this inspired, lyrical work.

Climax of the concert is the fiery turbulence of Shostakovich’s legendary trio no.2. Shostakovich dedicated his 1944 trio to his recently deceased friend Ivan Sollertinsky and it has become one of the most popular piano trios of the entire 20th century repertoire.
“Australia’s most internationally successful piano trio,” the Streeton Trio was formed in 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland and- after spending several years in Europe - is now based in Sydney.
In 2010, the trio was selected to be a part of the prestigious European Chamber Music Academy, where it was in residence for three years.
Winner of the 2011 Music Viva Chamber Music Competition, the Streeton Trio has been laureate of several prestigious international competitions and in 2012, the trio was featured as Musica Viva’s Rising Stars ensemble.

A Deal

Event Date: 23/08/2019, 07:30 pm

USU & Flying House Assembly present A DEAL
A DEAL by Zhu Yi, developed as part of "New Text - New Stage", an Ibsen International project for the development of new writing.
After its excerpt was staged at Hålogaland Teater, Norway, the play made its controversial debut off-Broadway in 2017, defying the odds to win international acclaim - and multiple awards.
Its subsequent Mandarin version was at the Jiangnan Theatre, China.

A young actress from China brands herself as an orphan and human rights victim to land a lead role on Broadway, meanwhile her parents smuggle one million dollars in cash from Shanghai to buy her an apartment in Manhattan.

A DEAL is a dark comedy that confronts the issues faced by immigrants as they seek to find their place in a new country; it confronts the clash between the values of Chinese parents and their new world offspring.
Directed by Chinese-born director Shiya Lu for her fledgling Flying House Assembly theatre company
(with support from the University of Sydney), it stars Abigail Coffey, Paul Chambers, Edric Hong, Suzanne James, Simon Lee, Katherine Nheu, Sally Williams, Susan Young and Shi-Kai Zhang. Design by Victor Kalka, sound design by Luna Y. Pan, stage manager Alex Liang, production crew Amy Sole, Simone Wang and Oliver Walton.
