Jane Bell - SLOPS

Event Date: 08/04/2023, 06:40 pm

Check out Jane Bell in SLOPS, a debut MICF 2023 show!
Jane Bell is a 32-year-old ex-corporate-ladder-climber and current kids’ party clown. A former engineer, competitive eater, winemaker, wedding planner, startup guru, astrophysicist, bartender and debt collector, Jane has done EVERYTHING – sloppily.

A mix of chaotic sketch comedy, stories, and stand-up, SLOPS explores the messy, disorganised, and frantic parts of us all – particularly for anyone who has ever wondered “Is this it?” after signing up for a 9-5 job with unpaid overtime, mountains of debt, and not enough skills to boil an egg.

But is a sloppy life a happy life? There’s only one way to find out. Slop your way through a quarter-life crisis with Jane Bell.

Jane Bell is a regular performer in the Melbourne comedy scene, currently in the midst of her fourth quarter-life crisis (assuming she'll live to 128). SLOPS is Jane’s debut solo show, premiering at Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2023.

The Stoned Ape

Event Date: 04/04/2023, 07:30 pm

A psychedelic journey themes of relationships, drugs and crime
You are invited to uncover a rich tapestry of deeply layered audacious themes, during the premiere season of The Stoned Ape, an all-new psycho-dramatic tragicomedy coming to the newly renovated Bondi Pavilion Theatre, from 2-13 April.

Exploring the format of some of Hollywood’s most celebrated films, such as Magnolia, Crash, and Babel, The Stoned Ape transcends the typical three-act format by interweaving three seemingly unrelated stories that slowly reveal their true connection as each compelling tale hurtles toward its own devastating climax.

In it, three families will be forever changed by Prue Cunningham (Susan Jordan), a ruthless and unethical divorce lawyer whose reckless disregard for herself, and the law, will have explosive and potentially deadly consequences.

A husband’s affair will bring out the hilarious worst in Prue just as her law school-dropout son and his girlfriend are about to collide with the psychotic bikie who has been supplying them with stock for their not-so-secret drug dealing. All the while, a crazed young woman has an older man firmly in her grip, but who is really in control?

Director Ruth Fingret has assembled a stellar local cast, including Johnny Boxer (Mad Pizza) as the bikie, to tell this satirical modern tragedy tackling big issues: crime and drugs; the impact of divorce and inequality of Family Law legislation; and the desire to recognise and heal intergenerational trauma.

“Ian Leete’s script brings these three plotlines together masterfully,” said Ruth “Dark comedy like this is the most difficult genre to direct. One must juggle the fine line between playing the comedy or the drama without slipping into slapstick or melodrama. This play has been no exception."

Pear-Shaped At Theatre Works

Event Date: 06/04/2023, 07:30 pm

Pear-Shaped at Theatre Works - Melbourne
“Now there’s a good riddle… What do you call an eye that tells a lie?”

A captivating blend of wordplay, magic realism, and puppetry, Pear-Shaped is a deliciously dark new dramedy about growing up, growing down, and everything in between.

23-year-old Frankie is struggling with their graduating design project. Not only is their director a Virgo, they’ve also been allocated an eerily personal childhood story - ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Frankie hopes that a box of old costumes will inspire some ideas, but when their sister Kayla drops it off, they’re instead sent spiraling down a rabbit hole of memories they’d rather forget…

An entirely new story from Miranda Middleton and Ziggy Resnick, ‘Pear-Shaped' interweaves scenes from Lewis Carroll’s classic books to tell an un-wonderful new tale in surprisingly wonderful ways. Told with humour, heart, and nuance, this world premiere production explores one Jewish family’s experience of what happens when food – a symbol of culture, tradition, connection, and love – becomes the enemy.

“How does Alice leave Wonderland, when Wonderland wants Alice to stay?”
