WE'RE BACK! Some of the funniest impro comedy legends of the last 30 years
WE'RE BACK! Some of the funniest impro comedy legends of the last 30 years mixed in with some of the brightest up-and-coming stars, make for a night of super-charged, ad-lib comedy. After a bunch of great shows last year, with huge laughs, wonderful performers, great impro comedy... and GREAT AUDIENCES they returns on Wednesday, March 27 to do it all again.
Marko was there at Belvoir St Theatre in 1985 when Theatresports first came to Australia. Since then he has performed in, directed and produced scores of Impro Comedy shows around and Australia and the world. From short-form to long-form to genre satires to improv Shakespeare, he's played with the best and now he brings them home to play at the wonderful, inner-west, community club, the Petersham Bowlo - kid's welcome!
Joining him this month:

CALE BAIN, legendary improviser (and that wonderful guy at Improv Theatre Sydney).
ANNA RENZENBRINK, impro star originally from Impro Melbourne, then the world, now (lucky for us) in Sydney.
DAVID CALLAN, creator and star of I SPIED, one of the only comedy shows ever to get 6 stars out of 5 from the critics at the Adelaide Festival.
DANIEL CORDEAUX, truly one of Australia’s impro greats, and also one of the stars of the legendary impro TV show "Thank God You’re Here".
LINETTE VOLLER, my current best/favourite improviser - we’re now in rehearsal for our Sydney Comedy Festival show “Rome Sweet Rome”.
Get set for a night of super-creative, inventive, hilarious ad-lib comedy, from sketches to long open scenes, to group mayhem.

Madness & Confrontation

Event Date: 24/03/2019, 03:00 pm

Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra
The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra continues its spectacular rise with the first of the
2019 “In Celebration” concert series Sunday afternoon 24 March at Sydney’s City Recital Hall.

Madness & Confrontation takes its inspiration from the story of the orchestra’s founding artistic director
Richard Gill AO conducting Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro (based on the original play “Day of Madness”).
It was the late, much-loved legendary musician and music educator who, together with co-artistic directors
Rachael Beesley and Nicole van Bruggen, had the idea of establishing the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra.

Along with a selection of duets and arias from Figaro, Mozart’s well-known clarinet concerto is performed by
Nicole van Bruggen on basset clarinet – the original instrument for which the work was written.
The climactic piece is Beethoven's magnificent 5th Symphony - which ushered classical music into a new era. Its iconic opening four-note motif confronts and enthrals audiences even to this day.

The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra is directed by Rachael Beesley with soloists
Jacqueline Porter, Soprano; David Greco, Baritone; and Nicole van Bruggen, Basset Clarinet.

Alongside the concert is the first of the year’s companion education programs, Voyage of Musical Discovery, at the same venue a few nights later.

Each Voyage invites exceptional guest musicians to join the orchestra on stage, and together they provide listeners with live examples and explanations of the compositional similarities between historical and Australian contemporary works.
For the March 27 companion Voyage, entitled ‘Phrasing & Form’, acclaimed singer-songwriter, Lior will join the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra and soloists Jacqueline Porter and David Greco to explain and demonstrate the many methods that composers and performers utilise to negotiate phrasing and form in historical as well as Australian contemporary works.

Elysian Fields Debut Album Launch

Event Date: 14/03/2019, 08:30 pm

Elysain Fields - What Should I say
Note: The winner will also receive a copy of the CD on the night.

ELYSIAN FIELDS, Australia’s only electric viola da gamba band, has released its debut album What Should I Say? – a heady blend of jazz, world, folk, and early music.
Founded in 2015, as the brainchild of Australia’s only electronic gambist, Jenny Eriksson, in partnership with leading jazz musicians, saxophonist Matt Keegan and pianist Matt McMahon, Elysian Fields is an intriguing new voice on the local music scene.
Operating as a sextet with a unique combination – voice/violin, sax, electric viola da gamba, piano, bass and drums – the band creates a sound world which defies categorisation.

The album takes its name from the central piece, a remarkable new song cycle by pianist and band member, Matt McMahon, which sets four poems by Thomas Wyatt - lyric 16th century poet at the court of King Henry VIII – and reputed lover of Queen Anne Boleyn.
Among other tracks are “Elysium” – an epic work by Matt Keegan – and “Dark Dreaming” an original work by bassist Siebe Pogson.

Together with the other members of the group – singer and multi-instrumentalist Susie Bishop and drummer Finn Ryan Elysian Fields has appeared in numerous concerts and festivals, alongside early music gurus,
The Marais Project, and on ABC Radio National’s Music Show.
They are currently Associate Artists-in-Residence at Sydney radio station Fine Music 102.5 FM.

The band is an ongoing experiment in creating new, improvised and composed repertoire for the electric viola da gamba - of which Eriksson is believed to be the only Australian exponent.

Event Date: 12/03/2019, 07:30 pm

Russian Transport the provocative and disturbingly funny play.
A powerful and suspenseful drama, Russian Transport follows an immigrant Russian family struggling to survive in Brooklyn, New York. Fishy Productions, in association with Darlinghurst Theatre Company, is thrilled to be bringing Russian Transport to the Eternity Playhouse in March for its Australian Premiere.
Dark secrets emerge when a mysterious and charming uncle arrives from the Motherland. He tests family loyalty and preys on their weaknesses. Provocative and disturbingly funny, Russian Transport questions how far someone will go for the sake of family and the pursuit of the American Dream.
Russian Transport was playwright Erika Sheffer’s first play. Following its 2012 Off-Broadway World
Premiere, Erika received the Paula Vogel Award – “to an emerging playwright of exceptional promise”. Russian Transport was also nominated for the John Gassner Award by the Outer Critics Circle. After the New Group production at the Acorn Theatre took Off-Broadway by storm,Steppenwolf Theatre Co in Chicago had a highly acclaimed, successful season in 2014.
The Australian Premiere is directed by veteran director Joseph Uchitel. “In her play Russian Transport, Erika Sheffer presents a profound and uncompromisingly honest exploration of the recent emigration wave from the former Soviet Union to Western countries,” said Uchitel. “This is a complex, thought provoking, brave and confronting play. It is also compelling and extremely funny.”
