Prelude In Tea Series Presents BOOK OF DEPARTU...

Event Date: 29/10/2017, 03:30 pm

Acclaimed, award-winning local trio the Strelitzia Ensemble take the stage
In Book of Departures, Strelitzia (Lucy Warren, Eleanor Betts and Michael Curtain) explores four very different works for Piano Trio, from the classical to the contemporary.

Haydn was one of the first composers to write for Piano Trio, and his bubbly, witty and very extroverted Trio in C Major is from a final set of ten, sometimes referred to as the 'London Trios', that he wrote during his second highly successful trip to London after his retirement from service to the Esterhazy family.

Australian composer Stuart Greenbaum originally composed his work Book of Departures
as a final commission for the disbanding Sonic Arts Ensemble in 2007. It is a work that travels through sadness and nostalgia to finish with a kind of triumphant optimism, and as Greenbaum writes,
"‘Departure’ is an interesting word. It can denote sadness and nostalgia
– but it can equally refer to the outset of exciting new journeys and in my mind this piece attempts to address both meanings".

At the tender age of 16, Shostakovich was sent to a sanatorium in Crimea to recover from tuberculosis, where he met and fell in love with Tatyana Glivenko.
An uncharacteristically romantic work, this trio is an interesting departure from the style many often associate with Shostakovich, filled as it is with lush melodies and lovesick outpourings.
The outbreak of World War I spurred on Maurice Ravel to complete his Piano Trio, as he described to Stravinsky:
"The idea that I should be leaving at once made me get through five months' work in five weeks!"
There is a certain vivacity and a sense of urgency to this work, and the result is an absolutely masterful Piano Trio which sparkles and surges with energy life.

BOOK OF DEPARTURES – Sunday 29 October Concert 3.30pm; afternoon tea (included) from 2.30pm
F.J. Haydn - Piano Trio in C Major, Hob. XV: 27
Stuart Greenbaum - Book of Departures
Dmitri Shostakovich - Piano Trio No. 1 in C minor, Op. 8
Maurice Ravel - Piano Trio

ITS 3rd Birthday Festival

Event Date: 24/10/2017, 07:00 pm

ITS 3rd Birthday Festival of Amazing Improv Comedy
Improv Theatre Sydney (ITS) is celebrating three years of classes this October with a week-long festival of shows. From Tuesday the 24th until Saturday the 28th of October at the Giant Dwarf Theatre in Redfern, ITS will be hosting a jam-packed lineup of Sydney’s best improv comedians. The ITS Birthday Festival Week is a celebration of the diversity and creativity of ITS students and teachers.Showcasing 18 shows across five days, five shows per night, with nearly 100 performers, the week will be a non-stop comedy adventure into the possibilities of improvised theatre.
There are two all-female shows (Girls To the Front and the internationally-touring Confetti Gun), the LGBTIQ-led Thank God You’re Queer and our oldest alumni Post-ITS, off the back of their sell-out Sydney Comedy Festival run.
You’ll see improvised musicals (Unplanned Melodies and SING), genre classics (the return of the Agatha Christie inspired Northbanger Abbey), a revival of the golden age of cinema (Anna Renzenbrink’s solo show Marzipan O’Malley) and a showcase of the silliest of improv (Frat Boys Dropping Truth Bombs).
Friday night will see the winning teams from last month’s ITS Smackdown Challenge vie for comedy supremacy against current champions Kate Coates and Pat Magee in the ITS Smackdown Grand Final.
Then we’ll go out with a slow-burning bang on the Saturday with a marathon eight hours of the 80’s-inspired, fully- improvised office soap opera, Working 9 to 5 (homages to Dolly Parton guaranteed).
It’s going to be ITS’s finest kick-off to their fourth and even bigger year!

Bespoken Word

Event Date: 26/10/2017, 07:30 pm

Bespoken Word is a monthly fresh new night of wonderful live storytelling & comedy.
The idea in creating Bespoken Word is give audiences an engaging, funny and at times poignant evening of great stories well told. The show is divided into two halves - the haves and have nots. Those who have prepared - and those who have not. The first bracket features crafted and practiced stories. Guests who take the stage in the second bracket have not even been given the topic yet, let alone time to prepare.

The first half, hosted by Kate Iselin will feature invited writers and people from the public performing their best stories linked by a theme for the night such as ‘Betrayal/Betrothal’ or ‘Wrong Place Wrong Time'. Each participant has about 5 minutes of stage time to take us on a vivid storytelling journey. The audience chooses the story that most moved them and the winner receives a magnificent very inexpensive prize and a bottle of wine.

After intermission, John Knowles hosts a live episode of ‘I Can Top That!, John’s storytelling gameshow as heard on ABC 702’s Afternoons with James Valentine. Its competitive true-story-telling-one-upmanship. Three professional comedians are challenged to tell their funniest true recollections based on a random audience suggestion. As one performer finishes their story, another shouts, “I CAN TOP THAT!” and tried to do just that with their own even better story. Its like The Moth meets Family Feud. It’s like Hamish and Andy’s True Stories but experienced live onstage without interruptions, editing or a net. The audience decides which guests wins the round, and then suggests a new topic. The key to this brand of comedy is that these stories are all true. Some will be shocking, others embarrassing, insightful, sweet or just plain hilarious. Its a smorgasbord of real life adventures
and raw revelations with an emphasis on vulnerability, confession and laughter.
