Week One – with 10 short plays nightly
Short+Sweet has spread the popular 10-minute format in theatre, dance, cabaret & comedy across Australia and the globe – with festivals now as far afield as Hollywood, India, Malaysia, Dubai and NZ.
Its Hollywood festival is one of the world’s go-to showcases for new talent on stage and screen.
But the original Sydney theatre festival is now in its 17th year and has a new home in Surry Hills’ Tom Mann Theatre.

Festival director Pete Malicki is a Short+Sweet legend, having written and directed for the fest for well over a decade.
This year S+S will again feature not only the judges’ voting and the People’s Choice audience votes,
but his director’s picks – all heading for the April Gala Finals.

Week One – with 10 short plays nightly - features a hilarious one-woman play about on-line dating.
Reality Check by Elizabeth is a comic tour-de-force by writer, director, actor and film-maker Annisa Belonogoff (pic attached).

The Independent Theatre presents Prelude in Tea The Marais Project and Elysian Fields
Early music specialists, The Marais Project and electric viola da gamba ensemble Elysian Fields return to
North Sydney’s Independent Theatre to present a delicious one-off program titled, “My Heart So Grieves”.
Directed - as ever - by the versatile Jenny Eriksson, the innovative program features music inspired by poets of the 16th century.
It is the first 2018 concert in the theatre’s popular Prelude in Tea chamber music series
which includes afternoon tea with refreshments and a mouth-watering array of cakes and fruits.

The first half of the concert showcases The Marais Project – Dutch-born tenor Koen van Stade, lutenist Tommie Andersson and Jenny Eriksson
on viola da gamba - performing songs of love and loss from the Elizabethan era, including work by the incomparable John Dowland.
Singer van Stade features on The Marais Project’s most recent CD, “Spinning Forth” which has garnered rave reviews.

After interval, Elysian Fields will play music including pianist/composer Matt McMahon’s gorgeous song-cycle,
“What Should I Say”, settings of poems by Thomas Wyatt, courtier to King Henry VIII.

Elysian Fields features some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians and composers including Matt Keegan, saxophones and Matt McMahon, piano. Joining them and Eriksson is legendary bassist Jonathan Zwartz, singer Susie Bishop and drummer Finn Ryan.
John Shand, the Walkley-winning SMH reviewer, wrote of the world premiere of Matt McMahon’s song cycle:
“Here was an enthralling dialogue between past and present. McMahon has preserved Wyatt's prevailing mood of courtly gentleness,
but spiced it harmonically and texturally…The songs were exquisitely sung by Susie Bishop.”

A riotously, raucous 9th Summer Festival about service, appetites and balancing acts - spanning the full reach of comedy - from Shakespeare's dark satirical masterpiece Measure For Measure to Goldoni's Italian dish of laughs The Servant of Two Masters.

What rules your life? The law? Your conscience? Your instinct? Faith? Should we be ruled by justice or mercy? Should a government legislate your sex life, your morality? How do you responsibly answer the prompts of your deepest, darkest impulses and remain an upstanding moral citizen? Shakespeare may as well have written this play yesterday - an Elizabethan Orange Is The New Black meets A Handmaid's Tale - Measure For Measure pushes the genre of comedy to it's darkest and most biting limits. A murky and morally ambiguous exploration of desire and power that will shock audiences with it's contemporary voice, will make you laugh and make you think twice.

Celebrate New Years Eve at Made By The Hill’s dazzling Masquerade Party celebration in Western Sydne
New Year's Eve is around the corner and Western Sydney’s hottest new social space, Made By The Hill, is throwing a Masquerade Party to end the year on a glamorous note.

With a hot lineup of DJs, Burlesque performers and photo booths, it will be a night to remember and the most stylish and sophisticated way to welcome the new year! Local performers, DJ Delicious and DJ Nicole Tania, will be hitting the decks from 6pm onwards and mixing up the hottest electro hip hop tracks all night long.

Tickets to the Masquerade Party start from $40 per person, which includes a welcome sparkling, beer, wine or spirit.
