The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra...

Event Date: 04/03/2017, 07:30 pm

The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra (formerly orchestra seventeen88)
The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra brings to life the colours and contrasts of Classical music together with the expressive and emotional realm of Romantic music - all performed on the exquisite and dynamic period instruments of the time!

In its exciting touring 2017 season, Australia’s world-class Romantic and Classical orchestra presents bold and daring programs with superlative soloists, conducted by Artistic Director Richard Gill AO
and Principal Guest Conductor Benjamin Bayl.

ARCO (which also means ‘to bow’ a string instrument in Italian music terminology) burst onto Australia’s music scene in late 2013 as orchestra seventeen88 and has since performed outstanding orchestral and chamber concerts all around Australia.

Featuring some of Australia’s finest international musicians and directed by legendary Australian conductor and educator Richard Gill AO,
it aims ‘to inspire, educate and enlighten’ audiences. Through the combination of historical integrity and quality of musical performance, ARCO leads a rediscovery of Classical and Romantic repertoire with the beauty and clarity unique to a full period instrument orchestra.
It has also made music education a focal point of its vision and the ambitious 2017 program steps this up a gear too with a series of workshops for public and private school students in Melbourne and at Sydney’s Santa Sabina College.

The excitement begins in March with the “Italian Romance” program, featuring Beethoven’s Romance for Violin (Rachael Beesley, soloist; Benjamin Bayl, conductor) and Mendelssohn’s beloved ‘Italian’ Symphony.

Met Concert No1 Masterworks

Event Date: 04/03/2017, 08:00 pm

Their first Met Concert for 2017
The Metropolitan Orchestra (TMO) under the baton of Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams will start the year with a magnificent program of genuine masterworks from Sibelius and Brahms.

TMO welcomes back young Australian virtuoso violinist Anna Da Silva Chen as soloist for Sibelius' beautiful Violin Concerto. The only ever concerto written by Sibelius, this work is highly regarded not only for its technical difficulty, but also for its virtuosic style being both masterly and exhilarating.
The second half of this evening of true masterworks features the legendarily timeless work of Brahms' First Symphony. Almost 20 years in the making, the first Symphony is a tour de force regarded as one of the greatest symphonies ever written highlighting passionate contrasts from the explosively forceful and dramatic, through to gentle meanderings in what can only be regarded as a magnificent musical journey.

The King And I

Event Date: 03/03/2017, 08:00 pm

Rockdale Musical Society, is set to pull out all the stops
One of Sydney’s premiere community theatre companies, Rockdale Musical Society, is set to pull out all stops when it presents one of the biggest,
most ambitious – and most popular – musicals of all time: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s THE KING AND I.

The 3-12 March season at Rockdale Town Hall features a cast of almost 60 actors, singers and dancers – including 26 children - as well as a full orchestra, all set in the spectacular 19th century royal palace of Bangkok.

Set in the 1860s, the moving, radiant tale of East meets West is based on the true story of English schoolteacher Anna Leonowens and her experiences in the court of the King of Siam (now Thailand).
Newly widowed, Leonowens sets sail for Bangkok with her son Louis to take up a position as teacher to the King’s children - all part of the King's drive to modernize his country.
Anna and the King (patronised as a ‘barbarian’ by western leaders) struggle to find common ground.

With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King teach each other about understanding, respect, and love that can transcend the greatest of differences.
Beneath the fraught, fiercely opinionated, conflict-ridden surface of Anna and the King’s relationship lies one of the most unique love stories in the musical theatre repertoire.
There is humour, romance, drama and its well-known songs include "Whistle A Happy Tune", "Hello Young Lovers", "Getting To Know You", "Something Wonderful" and "Shall We Dance?".

Big Crow Ticket Giveaway

Event Date: 23/02/2017, 07:30 pm

Big Crow - An original australian play by Mark Langham, produced by Brave New Word theatre company
Big Crow by Mark Langham is based, loosely, on a true story. In the early 1930’s two young Londoners ground down by poverty, Tommy and Albie, were offered a spur of the moment trip to Australia. No sooner had they landed than they were taken to work as virtual slaves on a huge station, completely at the mercy of the station owner Roy, a man who’s life has been a stream of disappointments.
Tommy is a weasel; swift, cunning and potentially fatal. Albie could crush you with his kindness, but only if Tommy told him to… and their desperation has led them to a decision – they’re going to kill Roy. Roy’s wife and daughter disturb the murder but are far more interested in watching than saving him. The murder is put on hold and a dialogue begins.
