Australia Felix By Geoffrey Sykes

Event Date: 22/03/2024, 07:30 pm

Richard Wherrett Studio,
Australian theatre and history are re-imagined in a provocative new Australian musical revue. This is the remarkable, true story of a runaway convict, life with tribes in the bush, magistrates, a leading government explorer and a landowner.
Told in the manner of a travelling theatre company of the time, on the eve of the execution of the convict. Underneath an entertaining surface layer the work has a sharp edge probing values in the past and today.
Genres are inverted, history upended with visions of early Australia that resonate with current debates.
Written by Geoffrey Sykes (Out of Africa, Somewhere South, Tales of Kabbarli) and featuring a strong cast
that steals its way through a rollicking, fast paced Australian story.
Australia Felix was showcased in December 2023 at the Chippen Street Theatre, where it received enthusiastic audience and critical response.
Sykes, also director of the work, says that the studio space is well suited to this theatre piece. “This revue show is presented by ‘travelling players’ in the tradition of ballads and storytelling.
"It’s set on the eve of the execution of the convict George Clarke with the sandstone and brick wall of the studio a perfect ambient setting for a nineteenth century jail - where executions were public events.”
Theatrically, the work is inspired by Marat/Sade by Peter Weiss. “The ending is as moving as it is edifying,” Geoffrey says. “It deliberately uses an entertaining convention to re-open questions of history. And it’s based on a true story.”
There were a good number of runaway convicts in the early colony of NSW, and this play concerns the life of one of them. George Clarke, also known as “The Flying Barber”, lived with nine aboriginal tribes.
Like other successful runaways, he proved a great explorer, and his claims to have found a great inland river came to the attention of Thomas Mitchell,
the NSW Surveyor-General.

First performed in London in 1962 the play centres on bachelor Bernard, who has a flat in Paris and three airline stewardesses all engaged to him without knowing about each other. It all boils down to juggling timetables and a reliable maid who never forgets to change the photographs.
Bernard's life gets bumpy, though, when his friend Robert comes to stay, and complications such as bad weather and a fast new Boeing jet disrupt his careful planning. Soon, all three stewardesses are in the city simultaneously and catastrophe looms.
Don’t miss this laugh out loud comedy/farce and fasten your seatbelts for the most deliriously funny flight of your life.

Gustav Mahlers Colossal Symphony No 2

Event Date: 17/03/2024, 03:00 pm

The Concourse, Chatswood
The Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra performs Gustav Mahler’s colossal Symphony no. 2, the ‘Resurrection’. Conducted by KPO’s Artistic Director, Paul Terracini, the concert will also feature the Willoughby Symphony Choir, and soloists from Opera Australia, Imogen-Faith Malfitano, and Celeste Haworth. Mahler composed his second symphony between 1888 and 1894. It was one of his most popular works during his lifetime and for many decades has been widely performed throughout the world.
Mahler 2 is the second of his so-called wunderhorn symphonies due to the inspiration he derived, directly and indirectly, from Das Knaben Wunderhorn, the collection of German language poetry that exerted considerable influence on Austrian and German artists in the late 19th century. As the title suggests, the second symphony’s central theme is life and death, in particular, life after death. The first movement was originally a tone poem named 'Totenfeier' (Funeral Rites), written in 1888. Five years later Mahler composed the second and third movements of what was by then destined to be a large-scale symphony. The fourth movement, featuring contralto soloist, employs a wunderhorn text concerning the struggle for faith. For the fifth, and last, movement, which adds soprano soloist and mixed chorus, he found inspiration in the poem, 'Die Auferstehung' (The Resurrection), by Friederich Klopstock that he heard at the funeral of Hans von Bülow. Mahler then added some text of his own to complete the work.
