Gaybies

Event Date: 07/02/2015, 08:00 pm

Sydney Premiere
A funny and moving piece of real-life theatre written and directed by Helpmann Award winner Dean Bryant, Gaybies tells the story of children who have grown up with gay parents. Drawn straight from interviews with children aged four to forty, these are authentic accounts of family life told with humour, honesty and wisdom.

Deeply personal and highly topical, Gaybies is the perfect answer to anyone who has ever asked, “But what about the children?”

Following rave reviews when it was first staged as a moved read at Melbourne's Midsumma Festival in 2013, this Sydney premiere of Gaybies is presented as part of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Experience one of Australia’s most distinguished soul artists
“Sanzone has a voice like the caramel layer in a piece of caramel slice…so smooth, warm and pliable…and you’d definitely want a second serve with another piece to take home. It’s rich and beautiful.” Lissa Christopher, SMH

Virna Sanzone, acknowledged as one of Australia’s most distinguished jazz and soul artists, is a singer whose strengths are her own defined style and tone. Sex. Lies. Art. How far would you go to achieve your dreams?
A critically acclaimed play about lofty dreams and the price that is paid for them. Jaime is the disinherited son of a respected art dealer who, in an act of inspiration and desperation, convinces his room-mate, Winston, to paint his girlfriend, Amelia in the style of Credeaux.

During the creation of the painting, the relationships develop into a complex romantic and sexual triangle that explodes when the wealthy client comes to view the painting. Directed by Dan Eady, the production features James Wright as Winston, Felix Johnson as James and Emilie Cocquerel as Amelia. Also starring Lisa Chappell as the larger-than-life Tess.

The Laugh Stand Gala

Event Date: 27/01/2015, 08:00 pm

Join professional mirth-makers Julia Wilson & Peter Meisel
Our first big gala for the year on Tuesday 27 January at the original home of Sydney comedy, Harold Park Hotel in Glebe, is a beauty!

Your MC for the night is the amazing Julia Wilson. Julia doesn’t see the world or live the way most of us do, she has a hell of a lot more fun. An Aussie woman like no other, Julia has headlined comedy events all over the world, thrilling audiences in Australia, Britain, South Africa, Croatia, Germany and Canada, with her own brand of filth. She is not for the faint hearted...so strap in! "Laughter rips through her audience like wildfire”, ComedyLive, Australia. "Brilliant" - Three Weeks, Scotland.

Your Headliner is a true treasure of Sydney comedy. American born and raised, Peter stands alongside Tommy Dean, as a very funny yank, made true blue, who has a long history in and influence on Australian comedy. Peter has appeared across radio, TV and film, in everything from the iconic, ‘Midday Show’ to ‘Good News Week’, to ‘Moulin Rouge’ and ‘You Can’t Stop The Murders’. Peter is a favourite of many comedians and audiences alike and has opened for a range of big acts, from the late Robin Williams to Arj Barker and Will Anderson. You are in for a real treat. “I’ve seen Peter Meisel….quite simply soar”, Demetrius Romeo, Revolver.

Julia and Pete will be joined by featured support, Katie Burch (Runner Up; 2014 Triple J’s Raw Comedy, ‘The Footy Show’), as well as Kirsty Mac, The Stevenson Experience, Derrick Vale, Dane Hiser and more!

Includes 2 for 1 meals and $5 Schooners of Coopers! Starts 8pm.

The Winslow Boy

Event Date: 24/01/2015, 08:00 pm

Experience Terence Rattigan's compelling drama
Terence Rattigan's compelling drama comes to the Genesian stage following its recent Broadway and West End revivals.

The year is 1911: Politicians fear a world war; businessmen are worried about striking workers; and suffragettes are agitating for the vote.
As England shifts inexorably into the modern world, one family faces a very personal drama that, in its own way, will shake the establishment.
A fresh production of Terence Rattigan's famous play, "The Winslow Boy", staged by Kent Street's Genesian Theatre, tells the story of Arthur Winslow's battle to save his son's honour, After learning that the Royal Naval College has expelled his son Ronnie for stealing a five shilling postal order, Winslow risks his fortune, his health and his family's tranquility when he seeks Parliament's permission to sue the Crown.
The play arises out of the celebrated trial in 1910 of George Archer-Shee, a 13 year old cadet at Osborne Naval College, accused of theft.
It explores the imposition of strict social codes of conduct and manners on individuals and what happens when they decide to challenge them , says director Nanette Frew I wanted to stage "The Winslow Boy" because it is a wonderful example of the phrase "Let Right be done" which is the basis of the whole fight for justice to which every man is entitled.

Operating for 70 years, the Genesians is Sydney's most professional non-professional theatre, boasting among its alumni the likes of Bryan Brown, Baz Lurhman, Christopher Stollery and John Bell.

"The Winslow Boy" opens on January 17th and runs until February 14th at the Genesian Theatre, in Kent Street, Sydney.

Vincent Jones

Event Date: 23/01/2015, 08:30 pm

Australia’s leading jazz vocalist/composer is back at Foubdry616
“In this country, Jones remains the benchmark.” John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

“He’s a soulful survivor, with a voice as cool as a long G&T and a repertoire that balances jazz, rock and soul." Beat Magazine (USA)

Continuing his hugely popular monthly residency at Foundry616, Vince Jones, Australia’s leading jazz vocalist/composer, returns to the club with his unmistakable voice, thought provoking lyrics and subtle trumpet playing - and a band made up of some of Sydney's best jazz musicians to top it all off.

Don't just take our word for it though! This is what music critic John Shand recently wrote when reviewing a Foudnry616 performance:

Sydney Morning Herald (June 2014):
"Jones has always fielded top-shelf bands, and this one was no different, completed by bassist Brett Hirst and drummer James Hauptmann: players capable of pithy, arresting solos, and of blurring the rhythmic lines between the soul numbers and the jazzier ones. Peeping through it all from time to time came Jones's trumpet: almost shy, but – just like his singing – without artifice".

As a contemporary jazz singer, Jones is renowned for his subtle, heartfelt style combining jazz phrasing with soul-derived moves, and his repertoire combines jazz, blues, soul, folk and pop influences.

His superb voice continues to engage audiences in Australia and beyond. Come and enjoy one of our best artists in an intimate club setting.
