African inspired Jazz and Funk
Mister Ott is Sydney's newest live sensation, an ingenious sextet strutting a heady mix of African inspired jazz and funk, led by superb saxophonist/ composer Matt Ottignon.

This is a six piece band playing original music inspired by the music of East Africa, in particular, of Ethiopia. Under the vibrant guidance of Mathew Ottignon, Mister Ott plays a mixture of original tunes composed by the leader, trumpeter Ellen Kirkwood, pianist Daniel Pliner along with some beautiful compositions by Ethiopian saxophone master Getatchew Merkurya and the "father" of Ethiopian jazz Mulatu Astatke.

Matching Mathew Ottignon's fearless excursions on tenor and baritone sax is one of the most exciting talents on the Sydney music scene, guitarist Ben Panucci.

The music moves from raging torrents of sounds to funk-laced, danceable jazz, to tender ballads of surpassing beauty.

This quartet sees eminent saxophonist and composer Sandy Evans delighting in the freedom of the classic jazz quartet with her imaginative rhythm section of Alister Spence, Lloyd Swanton and Toby Hall. Sandy, Alister,Toby and Lloyd are known for their work together in bands such as Clarion Fracture Zone and The catholics.

In various combinations they have performed at JazzFest Berlin, The Pori Jazz festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival and toured jazz clubs in Europe and North America includingStadtgarten, Cologne, Unterfahrt, Munich, Bimhuis, Amsterdam, Jazzclub Neue Tonne, Dresden.

They have appeared for many of the leading jazz organisations in Australia including - Sydney Improvised Music Association, the Perth Jazz Society , Jazz South Australia, The Melbourne Jazz Co-operative, the Morpeth Jazz Festival, The Wangaratta jazz Festival, The Bellingen Jazz Society, The Jazzgroove Association, Devonport Jazz Weekend, Bungendore Jazz Festival and The Valley Jazz Festival in Brisbane.

A city will fall. A hero will rise
POMPEII is set in the days leading up to the famous eruption of Mt Vesuvius, which destroyed the ancient city of Pompeii in 79AD.
Kit Harington (aka Jon Snow from Game of Thrones) stars as Milo, an enslaved gladiator who must fight for his life in the arena every day.
When Cassia (Emily Browning) enters his world and his heart, he must also fight his feelings for her – a noblewoman who is promised to the Roman Senator, Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland) and can never be his.
That is until all the world is changed by a storm of fire, ash and lava that will seal the city like a tomb. Now they must all fight to survive.

NOTE:

Bonachela, Godani and Obarzanek: three choreographers that have each carved their own, unique paths through the world of contemporary dance, pushing at the possibilities of movement with acclaimed, innovative works. Now, for the first time ever, these dance prodigies share the one canvas.

Rafael Bonachela, Sydney Dance Company’s award-winning Artistic Director, begins the program with the world premiere of his latest work 2 in D Minor, a drastic and vivid reimagining of Bach’s majestic Violin Partita No. 2 in D Minor. Italian choreographer Jacopo Godani revisits his critically acclaimed 2011 composition, Raw Models – a sinuous, sexy testament to the infinite malleability of the human body. Finally, former Chunky Move director and dancer with Sydney Dance Company, Gideon Obarzanek returns with L’Chaim! (‘to life’ in Hebrew and Yiddish), a thought-provoking and cutting-edge piece featuring the entire company.

Drawing together three distinct visions for dance, Interplay presents a triple bill of breathtaking ambition – a glorious salute to the state of contemporary dance, and an exhilarating reminder: that sometimes the things that set us apart are the things that bind us closest together.

Judy Bailey (Musical Director): Since arriving from New Zealand, Judy has become one of Australia`s leading musical identities. In addition to a prolific career involving performance, recording, touring and teaching. Judy has received numerous awards, including the inaugural APRA award for Jazz Composition, an Australian Entertainment award for Jazz Performance, the Order of Australia Medal for services to Jazz and Education, and more recently, the Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music. Judy continues to teach at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Jazz Connection is part of the Sydney Youth Jazz Ensemble Inc, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the provision of high quality music for youth, under the musical direction of Judy Bailey. These young jazz musicians are drawn from throughout the Sydney region, most attending the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Jazz Connection plays a large range of music. From early Ellington to Basie, from Brookmeyer to Judy Bailey’s originals: Come and enjoy a musical journey from the early 1900s to the present, revisiting the great bands including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Thad Jones and more.

​Tonight, this leading ensemble will be presenting a set of new Bailey originals, and another set entitled "Tribute to the Trumpets" - featuring great compositions by great trumpet players!

This show is great for all ages – especially young budding musicians – so come and get a taste of what big bands are about and experience a thrilling big band led by one of Australia's great pianist/composer and educators, Judy Bailey, in the vibrant atmosphere of a jazz club.
