Classical Melodies: Timeless And Thrilling

The AUSTRALIAN ROMANTIC & CLASSICAL ORCHESTRA continues its 2018 season in May.
The Classical Melodies tour invites listeners to discover the distinctive colours of 18th and 19th century instruments in a chamber music setting. The ARCO Chamber Soloists present two works for strings – Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik and Beethoven’s ‘Storm’ Quintet – and introduce two lesser-known works from the same period – an octet for winds and strings by German opera composer Peter von Winter and a wind quartet by Italian Vincenzo Gambaro. This program is a wonderful opportunity to hear up-close how the delicate qualities of the earlier wind instruments – flute,
clarinet, bassoon, horn – enhance the tonal breadth of the gut strings.
To bring this music to life with these instruments, the ARCO Chamber Soloists comprises specialist
musicians from around the world. Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra’s concertmaster
Rachael Beesley is joined by principal violinist Jakob Lehmann from Berlin, and Paris-based Deirdre
Dowling teams up with Simon Oswell on violas, along
with cellist Natasha Kraemer and double-bassist Kirsty
McCahon. Flautist Pablo Sosa del Rosario and bassoonist Takako Kunugi – both based in The Hague – join the orchestra’s principal clarinettist Nicole van Bruggen, augmented by natural horn specialists Anneke Scott from London and Graham Nichols.
There will be a pre-concert talk at 6:45 pm

GHOST - The Musical
Ghost is a timeless fantasy about the power of love. Walking back to their apartment one night, Sam Wheat and Molly Jensen are mugged, leaving Sam dead on a dark street. Sam is trapped as a ghost between this world and the next and unable to leave Molly, whom he learns is in grave danger. With the help of Oda Mae, a phony storefront psychic, Sam tries to communicate with Molly in the hope of saving and protecting her. The movie ‘Ghost’ has proven to be one of cinema’s biggest all-time hits, starring the late Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg it was the highest grossing film of 1990 and won an Oscar for screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin who has adapted his screenplay for this musical. The movie and the musical feature The Righteous Brothers’ Unchained Melody alongside many more terrific songs co-written by Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart.

LLOYD’S OPERA MACBETH LIGHTS UP THE BIG SCREEN

Phyllida Lloyd’s haunting 2002 production of Verdi’s Shakespearean opera Macbeth will screen exclusively at Event & Village Cinemas on 19, 20 and 23 May across 17 cinemas nationally as part of Royal Opera House 2017/18 Live Cinema Season.

Presented in partnership with Trafalgar Releasing, the richly hued spectacle features a marvellous cast drawing from Verdi’s 1865 Paris revision, including Lady Macbeth’s riveting aria “La luce langue.”

Featuring filmed performances from the world-renowned Royal Opera House in London, the program showcases the very best opera and ballet from the iconic venue, captured in jaw-dropping detail for Australian audiences to enjoy as if they were there themselves.

When Marlow mistakes Kate’s house for an inn and treats her father like an inn-keeper, things don’t go so well for him. With her brother causing mischief, her father insulted and her mother plotting a marriage that nobody wants, it’s no wonder Kate has to stoop to conquer!
She Stoops to Conquer belongs to that small group of classic English comedies which not only never go out of fashion, but never fail to delight. Directed by Peter Farmer (Away, The 39 Steps, Shadowlands, Charley’s Aunt), this production is a true delight: a sweet concoction of Goldsmith’s sly language and lovable characters. It’s also a rarity: a comedy that - like Shakespeare’s - has withstood the test of time!

Director Peter Farmer explains why he loves a rarely performed, 250-year-old comedy:

“Simple! She Stoops is full of charm – a quality too seldom seen in theatre today.
Most playwrights turn vanity, egotism and snobbery into bitter social satire but Oliver Goldsmith loves his characters – and so do we.

Farmer is confident Lane Cove’s “light touch” overcomes the challenge of 18th century language too:
