Spectacular High School Concerto

Sydney | June 28 | A prestigious showcase of finest young musicians performing live concertos
Six super talented individual finalists will perform their selected concerto with the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra in the 2026 NSW Secondary Schools
Concerto Competition at the Concourse, Chatswood, on Sunday afternoon 28 June. These outstanding young musicians – who have battled through heat and semi-final rounds to reach the prestigious event - are competing for invaluable performance opportunities and cash prizes up to $10,000. The competition, open to secondary school pupils in years 7–12 at schools throughout NSW and the ACT, is in its 42 nd year and again attracted the maximum of 100 entries.
Regarded as a stepping stone to national and international success, the competition has been held
annually since 1984 and provides an invaluable performance opportunity for young musicians to
showcase their talents as concert soloists accompanied by orchestra. The list of previous winners is a Who’s Who of famous Australian musicians including Amy Dickson, Natalie Chee, Alexander Gavrylyuk, Simon Tedeschi, Hyung Suk Bae and Anna da Silva Chen.
Prizes include $6000 + engagement to perform with the KPO during the following year for the winner; The Barbara Cran & Barbara Robinson Awards: each worth $1,500 plus perpetual trophies to their schools; Dual Crescendo Award for Potential: $800; KPO Players' Award of $500 to the best performer in rehearsals;
All solo finalists receive $250 and a certificate.
20 young artists performed in the semifinals and six were highly commended. KPO Artistic Director and
Conductor Paul Terracini said:
"The 2026 final of the NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition will feature some of the
outstanding young performers in the state. This much-anticipated annual event is a highlight of
Sydney's musical calendar – especially for ambitious young Australian musicians and their talent-
spotters.”

First, Do No Harm is the highly-anticipated bold new work from 2026 Griffin Studio Artist Grace Malouf that slices into the volatile intersections of medicine, politics, and bodily autonomy.

At the height of her campaign for President of the Australian Medical Association, renowned surgeon Melissa Annous faces an unthinkable crisis. Her son Alexei, an Olympic hopeful, reveals to her and his father Robbo that he has a secret that could upend all of their ambitions. As Alexei seeks a doctor willing to perform a life-altering procedure, he finds an unlikely ally in his mother’s professional rival, Ian Marney, a cocky young orthopaedic surgeon with a controversial approach to patient-centred care.

Unflinching, unsettling, but also extremely witty and poignant, First, Do No Harm puts into the spotlight questions of whether there are obvious limits to medical ethics, when it is appropriate to undergo body-altering surgery, and where culpability and agency lie when it comes to rights such as access to competitive sports for the trans and disabled communities. The play was a finalist for the Silver Gull Award, and had a staged reading as part of the KXT Storytellers Festival in 2025.

This is theatre that refuses easy answers, demanding audiences confront what it means to own – and alter – our bodies.

Ian Stenlake, one of Australia’s most popular performers, will star in the Sydney premiere
of Uked! The first play-along ukulele musical, at Bondi Beach from 18 June. Presented by the Bondi Theatre Company from June 18-28, Stenlake performs alongside charismatic singer-songwriter and actor Josephine Birch. Uked! is Melbourne playwright Jane Cafarella’s love letter to the humble ukulele.
It’s the hilarious and poignant story of Karla, played
by Birch. Dumped on her 50 th birthday by her violin-
playing boyfriend, Karla buys a ukulele and joins a
dating site, learning that love and the ukulele have a
lot in common. Audience members can sit back and enjoy the show or they can bring their ukes and sing and play-along too! A screen displays all the chords and
lyrics, so no-one misses out. The show premiered in Melbourne to sell-out audiences in 2019, and in Auckland, NZ, in 2024. Ian Stenlake will play thirteen different characters - including all of Karla’s YouTube ukulele teachers and love interests. Best known for starring in the TV series Stingers and Sea Patrol and seen most recently at the Sydney Opera House in The 39 Steps, Stenlake took up the ukulele during Covid to entertain his child. “It’s such a fun instrument to play for family sing-alongs - and so much more portable than a piano!” Josephine added “I love the ukulele; it’s got that Hawaiian feel and what better place to play it than at Bondi Beach?” An uplifting interactive musical about finding love after 50, Uked! will provide a much-needed tonic for Bondi, being staged right on the beach at the Bondi Pavilion Theatre. Cafarella said the musical resonates with many people. “I wrote the show for all the Karlas out there, and as an antidote to the misery of the news.” Those who have always wanted to tread the boards, can register to be on stage for a cameo appearance playing Karla’s fellow club members. Jennie's marriage to a football player has dissolved after six years. Both are uncertain of their readiness to start dating and developing a new romance when her breakup is so recent and he still has recurring memories of his deceased wife, Barbara.
Not surprisingly, Chapter Two mixes laughter with heartache and is considered to be one of Simon’s finest plays.

A shock neurological diagnosis sends comedian, marketer, actor, comedy promoter and fundraising manager Dane Hiser on a hilarious deep-dive into “big wellness” and self-discovery – getting close(ish) to finally accepting and loving (yuck!) his true-self and maybe... .just maybe... finding purpose. And it only took 47 years.

“Dane Hiser is as hilarious as he is original. F*%k, he made me laugh,” Fiona O’Loughlin.

BIO:
Stepping to the mic for the first time ever in 2008 with a 45 minute set (and another 30 after the break) in a self-produced show at Petersham Bowling Club (yes you read all that right) - Dane is far more confident on stage than he has any right to be.

He’s gigged with comedy icons like The Doug Anthony Allstars, Tony Martin, Peter Helliar, Matt Okine, Fiona O’Loughin, Aaron Chen, Chris Franklin, Tommy Dean, Merrick Watts, Becky Lucas, Cameron James, Mikey Robins, Lizzy Hoo and Stewart Francis (Can).

Dane featured in Matt Okine’s hit Stan TV series ‘The Other Guy’ (S1, EP1) as well as in ads for Aldi, Ryobi One Plus and Nissan X-trail and more!

Between 2011 and 2018, Dane ran his own stand-up comedy room – ‘The Laugh Stand' - in three venues (Kings Cross Hotel, Pelicano, Harold Park Hotel), attracted significant and loyal audiences, and drew many big-name acts (including; Tony Martin, Mikey Robins, Merrick Watts, Tommy Dean, Matt Okine, Peter Berner, Tom Ballard, Fiona O’Loughlin, Tim Ross, and The Doug Anthony Allstars).
